My boyfriend and I went on an amazing trip to the Amalfi Coast in Italy at the beginning of August. We spent just over a week exploring Positano, Capri and Sorrento. We did not have this trip planned in advance but it ended up being one of our best holidays. The whole trip exceeded our expectations and lots of you had questions about various aspects of it, so here is a full breakdown of our itinerary with tips etc 💛
FLIGHTS + FERRIES
One of the first questions - how did we get to Positano, Capri etc.
Flying from Dublin, we landed into Naples and took a booked taxi over to Positano. We booked the taxi in advance to avoid getting ripped off. It was €100 between the four of us for the two hour drive. After three days in Positano, we got the ferry to Capri which took about 45 minutes. We spent two nights in Capri and then got another ferry to Sorrento for our final three nights. A taxi then brought us to the airport which only took an hour.
In regards to Covid passports etc: we needed our EU Digital Covid Certification and to fill in a Passenger Locator Form.
ACCOMODATION
Bearing in mind that we booked all of the accomodation 3 days before flying out to Italy - we really lucked out. Between our three locations, we decided to do two airbnbs and one hotel.
Positano
We stayed at Casa Tutti Frutti. The host family were so helpful giving us lots of advice and recommendations. And the view was also beautiful from the balcony as you can see on my Positano YouTube video. Now I must warn you that the steps in Positano are no joke. You will end the day feeling like you climbed a mountain. If you abhor the idea of climbing step I would recommend getting your accomodation down near the main beach in Positano. However, we quite enjoyed the steps and it was a great way to burn off the tonne of pasta I consumed each day.
Capri
We stayed at the Capri Town Apartments. The apartment is located in a quiet but central pedestrian area, just ten steps to Piazzetta. Our host Stefano was also super helpful and took time to give us all of his recommendations. I love staying in smaller places like this because the local hosts always show you the hidden gems of the area.
Sorrento
We decided to stay at the Hotel Continental. The hotel is located in one of the most charming historical corners of the city and a few steps from the romantic Cloister of San Francesco. The hotel was in a perfect location and had a lovely pool which allowed us to fully relax on our last day in Italy.
FOOD + DRINKS
POSITANO
Da Vincenzos - The food here was A1. I would totally recommend going here if you are visiting Positano. I had the anchovi starter, squid ink spaghetti and pavlova along with an espresso martini.
Lo Guarracino - a beautiful setting overlooking the beach of Fornillo. Would recommend the rosé and the spaghetti with clams. It was the totally oppostite side of Positano than our accomodation so would recommend taking a bus or a taxi if you also stay near Casa Tutti Frutti.
Franco's Bar - this is one of the most famous spots in Positano to grab a drink. The nightlife is great in Positano and Franco's Bar is the it place to start your night. We acutally did not go here as there was always a long line - the doors open at 5:30 and it’s full within minutes as people beginning queuing before 5pm.
Arienzo Beach Club - I will write more about this spot in the next section but we spent the day at this beach club and the food was phenomenal. The service and whole experience was amazing and definitely worth it for a full day.
Dal Gigante Streetfood - this is a food truck on the way to Positano. We stopped in for one of their famous sandwiches. Peter did have an allergic reaction as he did not tell them about his allergies (!!) but even Peter will tell you today that this was the best sandwich he ever had!
CAPRI
Villa Margharita - our host let us know that JLo ate there the week previous - casual. But this was suchhhh a stunning meal. I would recommend this spot to everyone going to Capri. It is glam but not expensive.
Pizzeria Longano - It is right by the main Piazza in Capri and the meal was lowkey but so yummy - would also recommend.
Il Piccolo Bar - great spot to grab some lunch or a quick drink before or after dinner. Really great people watching spot as it was in the main square of Capri.
ANACAPRI
Lollo's Bar & Ristorante - perfect little spot for lunch and a drink in Anacapri. This spot is very central and is well-priced.
Capri Crema Caffe - we got a small little breakfast. They best croissants I have ever had - I went back for seconds!
Cafe Casa Oliv - another spot we stopped in for breakfast. The view was beautiful and the location was my favourite area in Anacapri. The view was so vast of the ocean I would presume it would be beautiful for a sunset dinner.
SORRENTO
Ristorante Fuoro - Everything was so yummy. I swear I still dream about the creamy lemon pasta I had there. Complimentary limoncello to top it all off.
Parrucchiano - this was such a beautiful restaurant. It was massive and had ivy and fairy lights running across the entire landscape. Insta-potential if you're built that way lol.
Semola Pasta Bar - solid choice - "cheap and cheerful" but the food was great! The doorway has tonnes of pasta strands hanging from it which was cool.
Skyline Rooftop Bar - this is the go-to spot for sunset drinks. It has a pool and a few tables overlooking the Mediterranean Ocean.
Star Pub - a totally different vibe to the spot above. Cheap strong drinks with a (70+ year old) DJ pumping the tunes.
Ristorante da Pappone - was in Nerano and it was perfect. Just on the beach it had amazing Ravioli and complimentary hors d'oeuvres.
WHAT TO DO IN EACH LOCATION
POSITANO
Arienzo Beach Club - this was dreamyyy. It was €96 each to have full access to the day beds, towels, changing rooms etc and to also have two cocktails, glass of wine, appetiser, main course, dessert, coffee, limoncello and water included for each of us - such good value. I feel like a salewoman giving you all the details but YOU WANT THE DETAILS. The beach club was on a more seculded beach and the boat over to this beach was included in the €96 too!
A Boat Day - The four of us rented a boat with Gabriel for 8 hours (we were surprisingly not sunburnt) and it cost €800 between us all - €200 each if you are allergic to maths. As far as I know the boat can take up to 6 guests! Gabriel had drinks, wifi, music and all of the knowledge needed for a great day. We swam through hidden caves, dived into secluded beaches and sat back and enjoyed the Amalfi Coast. We then docked up and explored the town of Amalfi - had pizza, sorbet etc before docking back up at Positano.
Explore - The main streets of Positano were so beautiful. Our last morning we took time to appreciate them along with dainty shops. There were street vendors selling colouful art, lemon earrings and linen clothing. Everything is so picturesque!
CAPRI
Explore - I hadn't realise there were two different parts to the island - Capri and Anacapri. We did a big exploration of both parts. Capri is much more commercial and glam while Anacapri is quaint and quiet. It is nice having such different atmospheres on the one island - truly is the best of both worlds.
We were told by many people that many Italians go on holidays to both Capri and Anacapri - which again highlights what a beautiful spot it is!
Rent a Scooter - Get a moped / scooter from Antonio out in Anacapri at Rent Scooter Alfano - it was a great way to get around the entire island and only €55 for 24 hours for the two of us. We took it out to the amazing Faro di Punta Carena and Lido del Faro. We also took the scooter out to the Blue Grotto but didnt end up swimming in there as it was so choppy!
Chair Lift - Hop onto to the chair lift that will take you up Monte Solaro. The actual ride itself was an experience but it also allows you to see the island in such a different way. Again the views were stunning.
SORRENTO
Book in Advance - Book scooters and beach day-beds in advance. We just rocked up to Sorrento hoping to book things on the day (like we had done in the last two locations) but it was impossible. The guys at the scooter shops were laughing at us saying that they have been booked up for weeks! So we ended up renting a car between the four of us for a day, which was actually a great idea as we were able to easily travel down to some AMAZING spots.
3 Locations Outside Sorrento That You Simply MUST Visit:
Il Lido Beach Club - we accidently stumbled upon this beach club at the Hotel Delfino. This has to be the best thing I have ever stumbled upon lol. It was a beach club with stone steps down to an amazing little crevice in the sea. The beach club was fancy fancy but like a dream.
Nerano - Nerano is a charming fishing village with no tourists in sight. It was old-fashioned and authentic, like stepping into an *Italian Summer in the 70s*
This was a lovely contrast to Sorrento, which I must admit was my least favourite area we visited on our holiday. Sorrento was quite cosmopolitan and lacked that bit of Italian charm.
Cala Di Mitigliano - Massive WOW to this little gem. It was a rocky hidden beach that you have to hike 20 minutes via foot in order to access it - but it was worth it! Again this was like stepping into another world. There were crystal blue cave pools, Italian disco music pumping and groups of young Italians soaking up the heat. 1000% recommend!
I hope this blog post was helpful and informative! I tried to include as much as possible but feel free to comment below or DM me if you have any other questions!
